I'm Steven Charles Roach. I was
born in Kansas and spent maybe the first year of my
life there. After that it was the life of a military
brat . . . that is, moving from one military base to
another. I eventually ended up in Columbus, Georgia
where I live, work, play, compose, etc . . .
The long and short of it is
this . . . after graduating from high school here in
Columbus, I joined the U.S. Army for four years, got
out, worked in a cardboard box factory for 2.5
years, went to school at Columbus State University
for my BA in Communication, and now I work here at
my Alma Mater.
During all that time I was a
rock drummer for over 20 years. After not getting
rich and famous, I started losing interest in
playing at night clubs and decided to quit drumming.
However, my love for music is as powerful as ever
and I've decided that selling my drums is not the
same as selling my talent . . . so I switched to
composing.
Composing is not the same as
rock drumming. As a rock drummer, you usually want
to be successful while you're young because . . .
well, because that's how the market works. If you
hit it while your young, then you have a chance of
continuing your career into your mid-life years and
beyond (like the Rolling Stones). But if you don't
make it as a young buck, you can do something
different:
1) Keep playing as a hobby
2) Mope around and cry
3) Put it all behind you like it never happened . .
. and cry
4) Or transfer your creative talents to a different
medium
I decided to try all four
options until I realized life is too short for 2 and
3 and I really didn't care for 1 . . . so 4 it is.
So now I compose. I don't have to be a young hot
commodity to have a chance at success as a composer.
With any luck, I'll make music for a video game, TV,
or maybe even movies . . . notice I included video
games. Ahh, video games . . .
Ever since seeing my first
video game, I was hooked. It was at an airport in
Charleston, South Caroline . . . PONG! Yes, that was
probably the first video game ever . . . PONG. I was
hooked . . . from PONG to the early home systems
(like Atari) to our present-day options like Playstation, X-Box, Nintendo, and . . . the home
computer. So why not connect the dots? I love music
and video games . . . video games have music . . .
maybe I could make music for video games.
So that's why this website has
stuff about both music and games. Enjoy.
